The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating a series of egging attacks on a Muslim street vendor in Astoria.
Published reports say Farid el-Baghdadi, 56, who runs a food cart on Steinway Street near 25th Avenue, was hit with eggs just after midnight on Tuesday morning.
The Daily News reported that after police from the 114th Precinct responded to his call and left, the assailant came back, this time attaching a note with a pair of vulgar anti-Muslim slurs to one of the projectiles. Councilman Costa Constantinides (D-Astoria) was outraged.
“This vicious attack is hateful and derogatory,” he said in a statement. “Astorians deserve a safe community without fear of assault or harassment because of their religion. As hate crimes have risen this past year, we reaffirm our core American beliefs in justice and unity, and stand against hatred and bigotry.”
