There were no surprises in the special election for the vacated Assembly seat of now-Councilman Francisco Moya (D-Jackson Heights).

Democratic District Leader Ari Espinal, the lone candidate in the race, took home 681 of the 741 votes cast in the race and will be sworn into the Assembly as soon as the results are certified.

There were 60 write-in votes submitted by voters, according to the city Board of Elections’ website.

Moya vacated the seat when he beat disgraced politician Hiram Monserrate in a race to replace former City Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras-Copeland.

Espinal will have to almost immediately go into campaign mode, as she will be challenged in September’s Democratic primary by Catalina Cruz, former chief of staff to Ferreras-Copeland. Cruz on Monday was endorsed by Ferreras-Copeland and former Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito. Yonel Sosa, president of the Association of Latin American Leaders, last Wednesday also declared his intent to run in the primary.
