Our Lady of Grace Celebrates "First Responder Friday" 1

Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy in Howard Beach celebrated “First Responder Friday” last week in honor of the everyday heroes who put their lives on the line.  Members of the NYPD, FDNY, Department of Homeland Security, US Customs and Border Control, Emergency Service Unit, the West Hamilton Beach Volunteer Fire Department and the Forest Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps., were on hand to meet with the students and faculty to explain their jobs and answer questions about what they do. The students and staff thanked all of the first responders and served them breakfast and lunch, and had prizes they could win. Organizers Phyllis Inserillo, Early Childhood director at OLGCA, and PJ Marcel, a parent at the school and a volunteer at FHVAC, wanted the children to meet with these men and women and have hands-on experience with them to better understand what they do for the community. “It’s so important, especially with remembering 9/11 this week, that children who didn’t live through that time understand what our city and country went through and how important these men and women are to us,” said Inserillo.
