Tap dancing has roots in Spanish flamenco and Irish clog dancing, sure. But the sound of metal cleats rhythmically tapping on a wooden stage seems all-American to us.

In the Rockaways, Anthony Lo Casio’s students from Miss Elaine’s School of Dance joined 20 adults from as far as Pittsburgh and even Mexico in a mass demonstration of the shim sham shimmy, tap’s basic step, on the boardwalk to celebrate National Tap Dance Day.

“The event has grown every year for the past three years and we intend to keep that trend going,” said Lo Casio.
