Neighborhood residents haven’t exactly been in love with the unsightly sidewalk behind the Whitestone Post Office on the Cross Island Parkway’s westbound service road. It’s almost totally covered by overgrown shrubbery from the United States Postal Service property.

The situation outraged civic leaders.

Greater Whitestone Taxpayers Civic Association Vice President Marlene Cody blasted the USPS in a Monday interview to the Chronicle, saying the lack of sidewalk maintenance “is not fair to the businessmen up there that are trying to get that village back together.”

She was also disgusted by the post office hanging a torn American flag with tears at the end.

“This is a disgrace for a government facility,” Cody added.

The USPS told the Chronicle on Wednesday that it’s replaced the flag and has “begun the process” of having a landscaper clean the overgrowth on the sidewalk.

“We appreciate these concerns being brought to our attention and look forward to continuing to play an important role in this community,” USPS Communications Specialist Xavier Hernandez said in an email.
