An Elmhurst fire took the life of a 50-year-old man and injured two others early Monday morning.

At approximately 3 a.m., police responded to a 911 call of a fire at 88-35 Elmhurst Ave.

George Ortega was discovered inside apartment 5L as the fire was extinguished by the FDNY.

EMS responded to the location and transported Ortega to NYC Health + Hospitals / Elmhurst, where he was pronounced dead.

The first responders also removed a 30-year old male from the location to the same hospital and a 36-year-old female from the apartment to Long Island Jewish Forest Hills.

NY1 reported the crews had the fire under control within an hour.

The man remains in critical condition and the female in stable condition. All three people lived in apartment 5L and all sustained smoke inhalation.

The Fire Marshall is investigating the cause of the fire.
