A 59-year-old construction worker fell to his death early Thursday morning in Elmhurst after a truck hit the cherry picker he was working in, according to police.

Jose Polanco, who was employed by Welsbach Electric Corp., was working on a traffic light at the intersection of Goldsmith Street and Grand Avenue when he fell nearly 20 feet to the ground around 2:45 a.m.

Polanco, a Woodhaven resident, was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the 56-year-old driver of the 2018 Hino box truck remained on the scene.  The New York Post reported the truck belonged to Bake Well NYC. The driver passed a breathalyzer test and was released. The investigation remains ongoing. The reports do not say if any tickets were issued.

UPDATE: This article has been updated to include the name of the victim and the type of truck involved in the crash.
