A former Richmond Hill High School coach and attendance teacher who attempted to engage in a sexual act with a student has been sentenced to an indeterminate term of two to six years in state prison, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown announced Thursday.

Luis Rodrigeuz, 45 and of Freeport, LI, was convicted last month of trying to engage in sexual activities with a 15-year-old student on the volleyball team he coached and sending her sexually explicit messages on her cell phone during a one-month period in 2014.

“The defendant was a trusted coach and teacher. He was someone whom parents believed their children would be safe with," Brown said in a statement announcing the sentence. "But this defendant violated that trust. This coach used an extracurricular school activity to prey on this young victim. This case should serve as a clear and unmistakable warning that law enforcement will arrest and prosecute sexual predators. This defendant is now going to prison as punishment for his actions and to protect society.”

Rodriguez used text and FaceTime to chat with the student, and on one occasion told her he wanted to engage in sexual intercourse and have oral sex with her. He also sent a video message to her showing him masturbating.

He was convicted on one count each of attempted use of a child in a sexual performance, first-degree disseminating indecent material to minors and endangering the welfare of a child.
