The Q34 bus’s layover in Whitestone has been changed from 25th Avenue off of 150th Street in front of Memorial Field to a Willets Point Boulevard location, state Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside) announced last Thursday.
“This change moves the bus off of a small side street and allows it to travel on a much larger main road,” Avella said in a prepared statement. “The adjustment allows the Q34 to bypass 25th Avenue, Memorial Field Playground and a very small, narrow two-way street.”
Avella had held several press conferences about the issue, saying that the site in front of Memorial Field was dangerous. A child was struck by a vehicle because of the idling buses in one instance, according to the senator’s office.
When the bus gets to the end of its route in Whitestone, it will now go along Willets Point Boulevard before turning around on 150th Street via 24th Road to go back to Jamaica.
According to the senator’s office, the current layover on 25th Avenue frequently resulted in buses idling on a two-way street that is very narrow.
