TMLA Glee Club and Orchestra took first place in competition

The TMLA Glee Club and Orchestra, above, took first place in their respective divisions when both participated in the annual “Music in the Parks Music Competition” on June 1 at Six Flags, N.J.  Both Glee Club and Orchestra received an Excellent Grade Rating. For the past four years The TMLA Glee Club and Orchestra, above, have competed and won first place ratings in competition with other schools in this event.

Ensembles from all over the United States and Canada participate in “Music in the Parks Competition.” In this event master teachers evaluate hundreds of ensembles throughout the course of a festival season which enhances the importance of TMLA’s ratings.

Congratulations to the Music Department and to Mrs. Vanessa Gecewicz and Mr. Brian Siemers and for all the members who work so hard to achieve these impressive results.

TMLA soph wins essay contest

TMLA sophomore Rose Reilly won first place for an essay she submitted on the topic of respectful treatment of people with Autism and Developmental Disabilities. The essay contest challenged students to discuss “How I Can Lead My School and Community to Become a Bully-Free Place for Individuals with Autism and Developmental Disabilities.”

Rose enjoys writing and especially likes to respond to a challenge.  In composing her winning essay, Rose used her own convictions about the topic combined with her knowledge about a middle school that engaged students with disabilities and students without such handicaps in an after-school gaming program where differences gave way to better understandings.

This essay is sponsored by Life’s WORC and The Family for Autism, with appreciation to The Claire Friedlander Family Foundation and the Queens Courier. The award will be given at a ceremony at headquarters in Garden City, LI.

TMLA Art Show

At TMLA’s Annual Art Show on May 17-18 many teachers, family members and friends of the artists enjoyed the display of a variety of selections in drawing, painting, AP Studio and Graphic Design that revealed a wealth of talent from students in the Art Department, above.

Earlier this school year, TMLA Art students won 15 awards in the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Competition. The Metropolitan Museum of Art displayed art pieces that were awarded Gold Keys from Sarah Gallagher and Kathyrn Munro; these pieces were on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from March 22 to May 27.

The Art Department seeks to foster student creativity for planning and producing works of art in a variety of media. A technical mastery necessary for the creation of a two-dimensional work and an understanding of major art historical movements are other goals of this department.
