Saluting the MVP at MVB 1

Principal Sam Sochet, second from right, who helped turn around Martin Van Buren High School in Bellerose Manor, recently was honored for his 32 years of service as an educator upon his retirement.

He spent the last seven years at Van Buren, a school in danger of closure before he took over.

Joined here by interim acting Principal Tracy Martinez, second from left, Sochet received a City Council proclamation from Councilman Barry Grodenchik, a former classmate of Sochet’s at Jamaica High School and one from the New York State Assembly from Assemblyman David Weprin.

Sochet this summer received the High School Principals’ Association’s Leadership and Excellence in Education Award.
