Some Hillcrest High School students in Cunningham Park posed with their teachers at the “It’s My Park Day” event on October 17, left. They came from student government coordinator Ms. Haydee Recinos’ student leadership classes and student government members. Sponsored by the West Cunningham Park Civic Association, Friends of Cunningham Park, New York City Parks Department, the Million Tree Giveaway and the Partnership for Parks, the event featured cleaning the park, planting bulbs and giving away trees.

Below, about 100 students from Hillcrest, Intermediate School 74, and Thomas A. Edison Career and Technical High School helping during It’s My Park Day. Coordinating the event were Benny and Rosa Wong, Bob Harris of the West Cunningham Park Civic Association and Kitty Azhar of the Friends of Cunningham Park.

Senior Sasha Beer is in the Pre-Med Institute of Hillcrest High School and is working to attend Hunter College to become a visiting nurse. As the senior class president, she works closely with student government advisor Ms. Haydee Recinos and is in one of her leadership classes.

Beer is on the yearbook committee helping advisor Ms. M. Telliz work on events such as the premature baby walk to raise money, and on blood drives. She is also on the school leadership team with parents, staff members, the parent coordinator and Principal David Morrison.

She had volunteered at Margaret Teitz Nursing Home during the summer of 2013, was an assistant at Rego Park Day School and worked at First Friends Day Care Center. She volunteers in the Hillcrest High School Chemistry Lab for Mr. Maystry and has acquired proficiency in Microsoft Word. All these activities are preparing her for her chosen career.

Academically, Sasha Beer has taken College Now courses at Hillcrest through Queensborough Community College in health professions, medical methodology and cultural diversity. She has taken college level biology at York College as well. In the past three years, Beer has taken academic subjects as advanced placement courses in global history, U.S. history, English and currently is taking AP biology.

Her philosophy of life is, “We’re all able to get to where we want to be, all it takes is hard work, true determination and a handful of loved ones by our side.”

Students in in one of Ms. Recinos’ leadership classes in Hillcrest High School display their orange collection boxes, above. During this holiday season the leadership classes and Hillcrest student government are collecting donations for UNICEF to provide clean water, nutrition, medicine, immunizations and education to children in need. This is just one of the many community service projects that take place throughout the school year.
