Newest MVB Hall of Famers unveil new lab

On March 20, Martin Van Buren High School, Queens Village held a ceremony to mark the unveiling of it’s new DNA/Biotechnology laboratory and the induction of two alumni who are in the field of science into the schools’ Hall of Fame. which is located in the main entrance hall of the school.  The activities were due to the work and support of science coordinator Ms. Carol Wang, the MVB Alumni Alliance and Mr. Steve Wilson, MVB Principal Sochet and the generosity of the of the Casper family. As part of the dedication, students performed experiments, then plaques were unveiled on the Hall of Fame wall near the main entrance and the honorees answered many questions from students in the school auditorium, right.

Alumni Marc N. Casper (‘86) is president and CEO of Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., which is the world leader in serving science education and technology; his company helps its customers accelerate life sciences research, solve complex analytical challenges, improve patient diagnostics, increase lab productivity and deliver medicines to market.  Alumni Dr. M. Natalie Achong (‘85) is a full time assistant clinical professor at Yale, chair of one of Connecticut’s largest community health centers, and attending physician at St. Vincent’s.

In April, Martin Van Buren High School in Queens Village held it’s Annual International Festival under the supervision of AP of Fine Arts Cathy Kross and Scholars Adviser Pam Fried. Eighteen separate performances took place with singers, dancers, Ms. Grexer’s Drum Line, Ms. Grexer’s School Band and Ms. Toussaint’s Dance Club all involved.  Mr. Sam Sochet is principal of Martin Van Buren HS. For the 2019 MVB HS senior trip, Coordinator of Student Affairs Brian Greenspan accompanied select seniors to the Honors Haven Hotel in the Ellenville, N.Y. The students stopped at the picturesque location in the Castkill Mountains for a commemorative photo. Photos by Brian Greenspan
