Breast cancer walkers

The Scholars organization and ARISTA from Martin Van Buren HS again took part in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, led by adviser Ms. Pamela Fried, standing center just above the MVB sign. The MVB HS team was able to raise $1,200 for the event by collecting donations from friends, family members, classmates, teachers and other faculty members through a bake sale.

The team took a moment for a perfect photo in front of the Unisphere in FMCP.

College Week

College Week at Martin Van Buren High School in Queens Village fires up the senior students to work on their college applications supervised by College Adviser Christine Stamberg, photo at right. Each day was a different event: financial aid presentation, instant decision day for LIU Brooklyn, posters on teachers classroom doors telling where they went to college, staff members wearing their college shirt or a school logo or color, then a College Fair night. To enliven the events there was a scavenger hunt to find out where certain teachers went to college with a prize at the end.

Puerto Rico Relief Effort

Martin Van Buren High School students Amanda Chang, Tatheer Raza and Summera Shah accompanied coordinator of student affairs Brian Greenspan to FDNY Engine 289/Ladder 138 in Corona, photo at right, to drop off donated goods for Puerto Rico relief efforts. Many students and faculty members contributed baby items, toiletries and other needed items for the drive.

Peer Mentors

Prospective student peer mentors at Martin Van Buren HS meet with Community School Director Garrett Richardson, photo at left. The peer mentors serve as role models for the other students in the school with the slogan “My Brothers Keeper.” Mr. Richards‘ presentation discussed student behavior as a way of determining if each student would make good role model. Principal Sam Sochet took part in the activity as well.
