The intersection of Jamaica Avenue and 176th Street in Jamaica was named for the late African Poetry Theatre co-founder John Watusi Branch, inset, last Saturday.

The theater was founded in 1976 by Branch and Yusef Waliyaya, and has become a popular cultural center, bringing together poets and musicians performing jazz, funk and African rhythms.

Branch died on Dec. 28, 2013, five days after suffering a heart attack that left him comatose.

The street renaming was sponsored by Councilman Daneek Miller, third from left.
