Jamaica welcomes 23rd JAMS Festival

The 23rd annual Jamaica Arts and Music Summer Festival was its usual smash success on Aug. 3.

In the top row at left, Bradley Tula, 3, and his father Adonay play a seriously large game of checkers. Next to them, Lorraine Stephen dances to a Caribbean beat while Mame Balde of Jamaica and Milgo Hussein, visiting from Somalia, enjoy the festivities. And what would a street fair be with out a bounce house or two?

In the center row, at left, Shamika Brodnax and Adonis, 3, dance in front of the main music stage on 164th Street. Next to them, food for just about any taste is available every year, as is the opportunity to win a large stuffed animal for your child or your girl.

In the third row, at left, Harry Naraine’s children, Elsa and Nathan, are about to indulge in ice cream cones to beat the heat, while next to them a young adventurer conquers a rock wall. At right, above, a woman giving her name as Winnie had forgotten JAMS was last weekend, but it didn’t matter.

At right, did we mention food? And at far right, David Serita creates a sweet drink out of freshly crushed sugar cane.
