Students from the Health Sciences Small Learning Community in Hillcrest HS recently visited the Margaret Teitz Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, not far from the school, where they performed community service. They met with the residents and talked to them, played games with them, listened to music and provided social warmth. Coordinating the event were Director of the Health Sciences SLC Gloria Zotti and nursing teacher Ann Utke. All Hillcrest HS students are required to perform 100 hours of community service prior to graduation.

Tammi Fatima Hussain is a senior Pre-Med Institute student in Hillcrest High School, who lives in Hollis and is active in supporting her school. For three years she has been in the Leadership class of the student government and has taken part in many community service activities in the school and in the greater community.

She assisted in the school blood drives, food drives, collected money for the March of Dimes, for UNICEF, participated in the International Festival for the past two years as a dancer, was in the Bollywood Dance Club as a freshman, helped clean Cunningham park during It’s My Park Days with the West Cunningham Park Civic Association, took part in the cleaning and painting of the Russell Sage Middle School park and volunteers in the Holliswood Center for Rehabilitation where she plays games with the residents, entertains them and helps with paperwork.

Hussain wants to go to Hunter College to become a nurse and toward that goal she received a full $11,000 scholarship from FAFSA and TAP. Her biggest inspiration is her mother who always motivates her and encourages her to pursue her dreams. It is interesting that she came her only four years ago from Bangladesh and yet has accomplished so much and contributed so much to her new country.
