Here's a snapshot of the latest happenings at Hillcrest High School in Jamaica.

BIZ/TEK learning to be GREEN

Hillcrest High School has a modern BIZ/TEK Small Learning Community which provides a Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing program. The class is taught by Career and Technical Education teacher Mr. William Aghassi, P.E.  Students are taught to build bridges out of wood strips or one piece of paper, towers with plastic straws, tape and paper clips, design Formula One race cars which run on CO2 cylinders, and to use the software V-Carve, which can design and carve plaques out of wood. The students are also enrolled in the ACE Internship Program, where they worked at architectural, civil engineering and construction firms in Manhattan to build the various structures mentioned. Some of the bridges were designed to hold a gallon container of water. The winning structure was the one that could hold up the gallon of water.

Some students who were interviewed, shown here with  Mr. William Aghassi (center), were Tasif Taher, left, who wants to become an architect, Dhanrha Dindial who wants to be an electrical engineer, Giovani Gonzalez who wants to be an architect and construction manager, Alex Briegelall who wants to be a civil engineer and patent lawyer, Zariah Dehaaite who wants to be an obstetrician, and Sharif Ahmed who wants to be an architect. Mr. Aghassi has taken the class on trips to NYC College of Technology, and Vaughn College. He says that his students, like many of our families, are the first to attend college and start the American dream.
