The Cross Island YMCA recently received a grant of $33,000 to benefit its annual summer camp program for children with special needs.

Dan and Linda Gerstman, left and second from left above, recently dropped by to visit the Lisa Beth Gerstman Camp, which serves children ages 6 to 14 with disabilities. It ran this year in two three-week sessions between July 8 and Aug. 16. The grant, a donation to the Y’s annual campaign, is from the Nassau County-based Lisa Beth Gerstman Family Foundation.

The organization’s aim is to incorporate all possible normal experiences of summer camp in a safe environment, with activities aimed at developing life skills and self-esteem and encouraging enthusiasm for learning. But it also included trips to the Transit Museum in Brooklyn, the Queens County Farm Museum, the New York Aquarium at Coney Island and the Museum of Natural History in Manhattan, along with a bowling outing.
