On Saturday, Jan. 4, students and parents from PS 174 William Sidney Mount joined six other elementary schools at CUNY School of Law to take part in the Young Debaters Program Debate Competition.
PS 174’s 27 students “dressed for success,” presented themselves in professional, formal attire, wearing their school colors. There they engaged in legal arguments in front of a panel of attorneys and law school students. Four winners received gold trophies and all participating students received certificates as acknowledgment of their hard work and preparation.
The program coordinator, Richard Celestin, has brought the program to numerous elementary and middle schools throughout Queens and Brooklyn. This program is designed to help students develop reading, writing and analytical skills on a basic legal level.
Through lessons, exercises and opportunities to compete during in-class debates, participants learn the essential elementary skills necessary to be effective advocates and dedicated students.
