Councilmen Jimmy Van Bramer (D-Sunnyside) and Danny Dromm (D-Jackson Heights) announced last Friday they are backing Melissa Sklarz in her attempt to unseat Assemblyman Brian Barnwell (D-Maspeth).

In their endorsements of the transgender political activist, the two lawmakers, who are both gay, said the 30th Assembly District needs a progressive champion like Sklarz as its representative.

“Over the years, Melissa has exhibited a rare ability to build broad-based coalitions to solve issues,” Van Bramer said. “I know she will provide strong leadership and be an outspoken voice for affordable housing, public transportation, education, women, immigrants and the LGBTQ community.”

“It’s clear she has a vision for change and the experience needed to get results up in Albany,” Dromm added.

In recent weeks, Barnwell announced he has been endorsed by unions such as 32BJ SEIU, IBEW Local 3 and the New York State Nurses Association.

According to state data, Sklarz has raised almost double the money Barnwell has since she announced her candidacy earlier this year, picking up $80,771 to the one-term incumbent’s $47,780.

However, Barnwell has $60,000 in cash on hand while Sklarz has just $23,510 to spend.
