Queens Borough President Melinda Katz is claiming victory in the Democratic primary for Queens District Attorney after pulling ahead of public defender Tiffany Caban on Wednesday in a count of absentee, military and othe paper ballots.

Caban emerged from the seven-candidate field on June 25 leafing Katz by about 1,000 votes. Wednesday's counting has put Katz up by 20.

"I am proud to have been chosen as the Democratic nominee for Queens District Attorney," Katz said in a statement issued by her campaign.

"We know that these numbers can and will be subject to a recount and also maybe a legal challenge, she added. "But what matters most is the will of Queens voters."

Caban spokeswoman Monica Klein, in a statement published by City And State, said the Caban camp remains upbeat.

"Queens voters are inspired by Tiffany Caban's campaign and her vision for real criminal justice reform," Klein said. "If every valid paper ballot is counted we are confident that we will prevail."

The New York Times has quoted Board of Elections officials as saying they hope to have a final count by July 16.
