MetroCard machines at the 71st-Continental Avenue subway station in Forest Hills have been unable to take credit or debit cards since at least Tuesday, based on observations made by the Chronicle as late as Thursday morning.

Machines that take only credit or debit cards as of Thursday morning can only be used to check the balance on a card.

During visits Wednesday night and Thursday morning, there was one vending machine that was taking only coins.

The Chronicle has reached out to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to determine what has transpired and if there is yet an estimate for when all machines will be fully functioning.

“We haven’t heard any complaints, but there have been complaints about it on Twitter,” said Jaqi Cohen of the Straphangers Campaign.

She said it is disconcerting particularly at a time when the MTA is cracking down on fare beating.

Cohen said technological problems with the cards can be particularly troubling for riders of buses, where no machine takes bills.

“I don’t think a lot of New Yorkers are going around today with a change purse,” she said.
