500,000 per day? You have got to be joking. All of Queens average just over 782,000 in 2013. And you are claiming this one line that services a community of about 130,000 - most of whom either don't work in Manhattan or have jobs where they need their cars is going to generate that kind of ridership? And it turns out only 30% of Rockaway residents even want the train - so there is clearly no demand. You have to be kidding me. Look at the subway stats for the train they do have and you'll see those stations have the lowest ridership in the entire system. Even when you add express bus passengers you aren't making it to 100k. Completely made up number. And that study? Not a single transportation planner was involved in it. Nor were their any architects or engineers and they didn't work with MTA. The whole thing is made up. I am sure the Queens College students and teacher did their best, but no way is this a study that shows the idea is feasible. MTA has already said no 3 times, including 2 times in connection with AirTrain. And that $700 million price tag - did anyone ask Goldfeder where he got that number from? No transportation engineers have been up there to price out the cost of rebuilding the completely eroded right of way or test the 100 year old trestles to see if they can take the weight of modern trains. And, is that number based on an LIRR connection or a subway connection requiring tunneling? did anyone ask him these questions? Because there is no way that train is going to cost less than $1 billion. Just look at all the other rail projects we have and their price tags. He is just making up numbers that he likes. So in the end, this is primarily an opinion survey, not a technical feasibility study, that lacks the ability and qualifications to in any way accurately to predict ridership [in fact their number is insane] or cost. Moreover, the one thing the study is qualified to asses - public opinion - revealed that 60%-70% of people in the study area did NOT want a train, and that more people in Goldfeder's district, the putative riders of this train, would actually prefer a park. Creation of the proposed QueensWay park and bikeway along the long abandoned Rockaway Beach Branch line, which is already owned by the City of New York and already contains some 20 acres of parkland, would tie in perfectly to an expanded National Park. The QueensWay would enable bicyclists to ride down to bike lanes in Howard Beach that link up with the existing and new bikeways planned for Jamaica Bay, whereas the rail line that already runs by the refuge has no station providing access to the Park. I generally agree with all of these initiatives, especially BRT service, and applaud you for advocating for these changes. However your failure to include bike infrastructure improvements leaves your efforts to improve Woodhaven Blvd incomplete. As population grows but road real estate cannot, we need to press for ways to consolidate traffic. BRT is a big step in the right direction, but the use of bikes must also be considered, and made a part of, the solution to traffic congestion. Mar 31, 2013
