The camera at the Francis Lewis Boulevard ramp off the Long Island Expressway is a very definite GOTCHA KA-CHING $$$$$ device.
What most people don't realize is that virtually all the other speed cameras are also GOTCHA devices, not safety devices. The cameras make money only when located in places where the posted limits are set less-safely and artificially-low, below the safest 85th percentile speed levels. Then governments add insult to injury by concealing where the cameras are and refusing to put up warning signs to slow people down. IF the goal was safety, which it is not, the cameras would very clearly identified and would have large clear signs in advance of the cameras.
The cameras are about MONEY, not safety, and should be banned by law.

One thing can be done immediately at virtually no cost. Reset the yellow intervals longer for the 0.4 seconds authorized by the Florida Department of Transportation AND for the actual approach speeds of at least 85% of the vehicles. Between the two changes, many lights will have yellows about one full second longer. This will DRASTICALLY reduce violations from the predatory red light camera cash register scams.
Note that the area Florida Department of Transportation District may strongly oppose resetting the yellow for more safety and fewer violations because it will drastically reduce the number of $83 commissions the state gets from each money grab scam ticket where the yellows are too short.

Governor Cuomo has signed on to a five year program to pick the pockets of mostly safe drivers with predatory money-grab speed camera cash registers.
This will NOT improve safety, the cameras may reduce safety, and the ONLY goal for the program is $$$$$$$$$$$. It is a total scam for money.
