Some residents were evacuated from their homes Friday morning while firefighters cleared up several containers of old gasoline someone left at the corner of the westbound Long Island Expressway service road and 73rd Place, at the Maspeth-Middle Village border, police reported.

Maspeth High School administrators were notified of the activity but the school was not evacuated, according to a police statement issued by Det. Thomas Bell of the 104th Precinct Community Affairs unit.

The Fire Department notified the 104th Precinct of a suspicious package at the intersection at about 10:05 a.m., Bell said. Responding officers who surveyed the scene called in the Emergency Services Unit.

Homes that were in close proximity were evacuated. ESU determined that several containers at the scene contained old, degraded gasoline. A duffel bag containing toiletries and socks was found nearby.

ESU called in the FDNY's Hazmat Unit, which, Bell said, "rendered the gasoline inert and placed the remnants into a yellow container which will be removed at a later date and time."
