Mayor-Elect Bill de Blasio today announced his appointment of William J. Bratton to serve as New York City’s next Police Commissioner.
In selecting Bratton to lead the New York Police Department, de Blasio emphasized his commitment to proactive policing to protect New Yorkers, while simultaneously respecting their civil liberties.
Of all the accomplishments of Mayor Bloomberg’s three terms in office, which this page will be examining over the next several weeks, along with his shortcomings, the most profound is the remarkable reduction in violent crime that he has achieved.
The cut in the murder rate over the last 20 or so years has been nothing short of a miracle. In 1990, homicides in the city peaked at 2,262. They began dropping the next year under Mayor David Dinkins, and continued falling under Mayor Rudy Giuliani. But it was under the leadership of Mike Bloomberg that New York became, as he would be the first to point out, the safest big city in the United States, with murder rates far below comparable municipalities such as Chicago and Los Angeles.
Just how crazy was David Berkowitz, the .44 Caliber Killer who terrorized Queens and the rest of the city for more than a year beginning in late July 1976? Crazy enough that for months before the man who killed six and wounded seven was caught, he taunted the police and the press with letters filled with insane rants such as “I am the ‘Son of Sam.’ Sam loves to drink blood. ‘Go out and kill,’ commands father Sam. ... Police, let me haunt you with these words — I’ll be back! I’ll be back! To be interpreted as — bang, bang, bang, bang.”
Berkowitz favored killing young women, often as they sat in cars with friends or boyfriends. Two of the people he murdered, Christine Freund and Virginia Voskerichian, were killed in Queens, while another young woman here was rendered a paraplegic and other victims suffered various wounds in his attacks.
A spate of recent laser incidents targeting aircraft and pilots are increasing in frequency in the New York area. In the same period year–to-date, reports of lasers directed at aircraft are up 17 percent. Injuries involving the same laser incidents have also increased. Lasers can temporarily or permanently blind a pilot and crew.
Millions of people have seen the video of a family being terrorized by a gang of motorcyclists on the West Side Highway on Sept. 29. Most are disgusted as they see the bikers hem the driver in, force him to stop and trash his SUV. Off-camera, they beat him as his wife and their 2-year-old child cower in fear of the reckless mob.
But not everyone is disturbed by the bikers’ behavior. Some people are on their side. And among their sympathizers may be a Queens woman who just happens to be the district office manager for City Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras of East Elmhurst.
The Queens man charged with attempting to supply anti-American fighters in Afghanistan with winter clothing is simply a subject of “police entrapment,” according to his representative at arraignment.
After a two-year investigation by the NYPD’s Intelligence Division, 27-year-old Humayoun Ghoulan Nabi of Elmhurst was arrested and charged last week with second-degree soliciting or providing support for an act of terrorism and fifth-degree conspiracy along with 32-year-old Ismail Alsarabi of Brooklyn.
An Elmhurst resident has been charged along with a Brooklyn man with conspiring to solicit aid in support of terrorist organizations — including the Taliban and Al-Qaeda — fighting American troops in Afghanistan.
The men consider U.S. soldiers to be “dogs” and “bastards who rape our sisters” and believe Muslims should “kill them and cut them into pieces,” according to a deposition filed in the case by the lead investigator, a detective with the NYPD’s Intelligence Unit.
I am truly amazed! How low can Republicans go? Thank goodness the GOP is here to cut billions from food stamps and fight for the right of wealthy Americans to buy a new yacht every year.
How should we describe Congress? Incompetent? Perhaps spiteful is a better word. No wait, I’ve got it. The word I was looking for is treasonous, for causing a government shutdown that will prevent veterans from receiving benefits and seniors from filing for Social Security. All in an attempt to defund Obamacare, which would earn them the “privilege” of denying healthcare to millions of Americans. How patriotic.
One Republican, Rep. Bill O’Brien, even went so far as to compare Obamacare to the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. Wow! Providing coverage for 3.1 million young Americans through their parents’ plans, having 6.3 million seniors pay less for prescription drugs, ensuring coverage for people with pre-existing conditions (or as the GOP refers to them, “damaged goods”) and letting more than 100 million Americans get preventative care like mammograms and cancer screenings is like a law that let slave owners get their slaves back?
At what point are Congressional Republicans led away in cuffs and charged with extortion, treason and political terrorism? They risk the well-being of all Americans and blame everything on President Obama. The only thing that shines through their distorted view of facts is their hatred of a black president! Am I claiming that all Republicans are racist, homophobic, sexist, religious fanatics? No, but if the shoe fits, kick yourself in the head with it.
One last word on food-stamps: Under the bill the GOP voted for, states would have to require recipients to work at least 20 hours a week and be drug tested. I suggest the same for the Republicans in Congress.
The city’s largest Sikh community, in Richmond Hill, responded to the recent attack on a Sikh man in Manhattan with a familiar message: We won’t live in fear.
Dr. Prabhjot Singh, a Sikh-American professor from Columbia University, had his jaw fractured when he was attacked by a mob of more than 20 people on Sept. 21 in Harlem. The assailants allegedly shouted “Osama” and “terrorist” before grabbing his beard and beating him to the ground. The incident is being investigated by the NYPD as a hate crime.
The Forest Hills community remembered the attacks of 9/11 and the loss of one of its own on that day.
A memorial event was held on Sept. 11 in front of the Forest Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps on Metropolitan Avenue.

The situation in Egypt continues to spiral further out of control, and it is just a matter of time before total civil war breaks out throughout the country. Should this occur, the entire Middle East will erupt into even more violence, terror and bloodshed. This would certainly have a major effect on world peace and stability — and it would be a very serious effect, certainly not for the better. The international community needs to work to bring a halt to the violence and bloodshed now!
Just remember what happened on Sept. 1, 1939 — the day our innocence was forever gone with the wind.

With one month to go before the new school year begins, some parents, staff and students at a College Point elementary school are seeking a change in leadership.
They say Jennifer Jones-Rogers, principal at PS 29, located at 125-10 23 Ave., harasses her staff, flouts legal requirements and bullies her students, and they want her removed.
Please forgive our ignorance here in these United States. Most of us know very little about the Muslim religion. But are we wrong in concluding that like all religions, their Koran also lends itself to a variety of interpretations? From almost every day’s news broadcasts we see evidence that some Muslims practice their particular variety of Islam so fanatically that they see nothing wrong with maiming, even killing those who practice it differently.
From what we have read, over the last few decades, they, the extremists, certainly don’t seem to like or respect non-Muslims to an even greater degree. So we would probably be wise to conclude that even if a small percentage of the Muslims among us were virulently anti-American, they would congregate with other Muslims especially at their houses of worship. Doesn’t it make sense to check out these people, who base their vitriol toward us from a religious standpoint, and who are potentially capable of mass murder, so that New York City law enforcement acts before, and not after?
As the old saying goes, better safe than sorry.
July 4, 1940: The body of NYPD Det. Joseph Lynch lies on the ground at the World’s Fair, as Det. Ferdinand Socha is being transported to Flushing Hospital for his wounds from a bombing.
On July 4, 1940, electrician William Strachan discovered a ticking suitcase in a ventilation compartment on the second floor of the British Pavilion at the World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. He immediately summoned the police.
NYPD detectives William Federer and Frederick Morelock arrived first. Morelock bravely carried the suitcase in his bare hands through the crowds of sightseers outside the British Pavilion, around the Italian Pavilion, to a deserted spot in the rear near the Polish Pavilion.
The NYPD will soon begin installing 57 new surveillance cameras around Queens, eyes in the sky that will be paid for with $2 million in capital money allocated by Borough President Helen Marshall.
In a statement issued by her office, Marshall said that since the money was allocated in her 2013 budget, the NYPD has been conducting rigorous studies of data in order to place them where they will do the most good for law enforcement.
Every other day, Bob Holden is out at Juniper Valley Park, cutting the grass on the baseball fields where the area’s Little Leaguers play.
It’s labor, but for Holden it’s a labor of love.
Supreme Court backs same-sex marriage benefits
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled a major provision of the Clinton-era Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional, cheering supporters of same-sex marriage nationwide.
Councilman Peter Koo (D-Flushing) secured funding to bring NYPD ARGUS surveillance cameras to strategic locations in his district. These cameras will help the NYPD investigate crimes, monitor key locations and enhance public safety in the community.
“One of my top priorities is to help ensure the highest level of public safety for residents,” Koo said in a statement. “Therefore, I allocated resources to purchase the latest technology and surveillance equipment to assist the NYPD in protecting our community.”
