Whether you are an incoming freshman or jaded senior, dorm life is a college course in its own right. There are a number of low-cost consumer goods out there to make your life a bit easier.

There is never enough closet space in a dorm room so one way of maximizing it is to use Wonder Hanger, a device that has numerous hooks on one hanger to allow you to store more clothes.

Bedbugs, as we’ve all been hearing, are an epidemic everywhere. Verilux’s CleanWave is an ultraviolet rod that helps kill all kinds of mites and insects in your bedding and elsewhere.

While in bed, you may want to read while your roommate is trying to sleep. Verilux’s PageLight is a square LED clear pane that allows you to read without eyestrain and without turning on any lights. If you want to read at a more traditional place, Philips’ Leda Desk Lamp throws off a lot of light but is also energy efficient.

Schlepping textbooks around campus and taking clothes back and forth for long weekends has long been part of the collegiate experience. Ful Double Take kills two birds with one stone as it is a suitcase with a detachable backpack. It has long been popular with musicians.

Nobody likes a slob so keeping your room clean is a must. Dyson makes terrific compact vacuums. Another good product from Dyson is its Air Multiplier which is a bladeless and filterless air cleaner/fan.

The cost of laptop computers has come down dramatically in the last couple of years. Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Lenovo, and Acer all make durable computer notebooks that come loaded with popular software for under $750.

We’ve all seen those television ads about where dad is grumbling about how his high cell phone bill because of all the texting and calls his kids are making. Competition between cell phone carriers is more heated than ever so it is a good idea to speak with your provider about any new price plans promotions that they may have.

Guys, listen up. It is easy to get into a jeans and t-shirt rut. Keep in mind that Armani Exchange, American Eagle Outfitters, and Lands End all make great-looking shirts and pants that are ideal for both socializing and job interviews. Auri Footwear makes fashionable soft leather shoes that feel as if you are wearing sneakers.

Of course, dressing well is a waste if you don’t smell like a million bucks as well. Axe is offering a new line of shower gels and body sprays from Unilever that accomplish this goal.

Now go out and get “A’s” both on and off campus.

Welcome to the discussion.
