To remember Leonard Bernstein on what would have been his 90th birthday, Queens Symphony Orchestra will present “Spiritual Journey,” a concert featuring music by Carols Chavez, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky and of course Bernstein himself, on Saturday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Queensborough Performing Arts Center.

“Spiritual Journey” is the final concert in QSO’s 2008-2009 “Bernstein & Friends” Masterworks Series and will conclude with Bernstein’s choral masterpiece “Chichester Psalms.” Concert choirs from Bayside High School, Francis Lewis High School, Central Islip High School and the Newark Boys Chorus will be singing.

QSO will hold a pre-concert lecture series at 6:30 p.m., during which Maestro Constantine Kitsopoulos will explain the chosen repertoire of the concert and answer questions about the program.

Kitsopoulos, who is in his third season as QSO music director, has conducted symphony orchestras around the world and has lead orchestras for various operas and Broadway musicals.

QSO is the only professional orchestra in Queens. Now in its 56th season, it strives to bring the best in classical, chamber, pops and arts-in-education to borough residents.

The Queensborough Performing Arts Center is located at 56th Avenue and Springfield Boulevard in Bayside. Tickets to the concert are $25-$30 for adults, $20 for students and seniors and $10 for children 12 and under. Groups of 10 or more are eligible for a 20 percent discount.
