Exhibits

St. John’s University will host the 8th Annual National Juried Art Exhibition now through Friday, Aug. 16, at the Chung-Cheng Art Gallery, located in Sun Yat Sen Hall on the Jamaica Estates campus. There will be an artist’s reception on Thursday, July 18, from 6-8pm at the gallery. It is open Monday through Thursday, 10am to 3pm; closed on Fridays.

An exhibition of new works by four photographers chosen by En Foco, Inc., will be presented at the Godwin-Ternbach Museum at Queens College now through July 30. Godwin-Ternbach hours are Tuesday through Thursday, 11am to 7pm and 11am to 7pm on Saturday. Call 997-4747.

The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, on Sunday, July 21-Sept. 8, will host a show of works by wildlife illustrator Michael DiGiorgio. A special opening reception will be held at the Refuge Visitor Center on Sunday, July 21 from 2-4:30pm. During the reception DiGiorgio will be on hand to discuss his works and to give demonstrations. The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is located on Crossbay Boulevard, in Broad Channel.

Music

The New York Metropolitan Country Music Association will present a Country and Western Concert at Juniper Valley Park on Tuesday, July 23, at 7:30pm featuring the band Southern Heart. Juniper Valley Park is located at 80 St. and Juniper Valley Blvd., Middle Village. There will be a dance exhibition by the Round-up Dancers. A dance lesson will be given during the band break.

The New York Metropolitan Country Music Association will present a Country and Western concert at the Seuffert Bandshell, Forest Park, Woodhaven on Thursday, August 1, 7 to 9pm. The band Roadhouse will be featured.

Tours

The Mansions of Old Astoria Village walking tour will be held on Saturday, July 27 at 1pm. Meet at the Neptune Diner, corner of Astoria Blvd. and 31 St. Admission is $10, $8 for students and seniors, free for NYPD, FDNY and EMS personnel with ID. Lessons

St. John’s Queens Hospital in Elmhurst, will hold summer yoga classes. Choice of six-week classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays at 3, or 7pm. Classes are held in 2 West Conference Room. Ðhe Global dance classes will be held Thursdays at 7pm and Saturdays at 1pm at the Hollis Unitarian Church, 195-39 Hillside Ave., Jamaica. Classes are $12. Global dance is for non-dancers and lovers of yoga.

American-Italian Cancer Foundation Queens screening sessions will be held on Thursday, July 18 at Immaculate Conception Church, 86-45 Edgerton Blvd., Jamaica from 9am-5pm.

St. Vincent Catholic Medical Center, St. John’s Queens Hospital, 90-02 Queens Blvd. in Elmhurst, will hold a support group for women with breast or ovarian cancer in Spanish. The group will meet on Fridays, July 19, Aug. 16 and Sept. 6 and 20 from 5:30 to 7pm in the 2nd Floor Boardroom.

Free cholesterol screenings, blood pressure checks and dental screenings will be performed as a community outreach by neighborhood doctors at Revealed Word Christian Center’s Health Fair on Saturday, July 20, between 1 and 5pm, at 230-01 Linden Blvd., Cambria Heights.

A presentation and workshop about the traditional Polynesian outrigger canoe will be held at the Jacob Riis Park Bathhouse on Friday, July 26 at 10am. Learn about the canoe’s origins and its significance in Polynesian culture from ancient times to the present.
