Exhibits

A Sept. 11 Memorial Exhibit is open at the Poppenhusen Institute, 114-04 14 Rd., College Point, for at least one year. Hours are Monday-Tuesday, 10am-7:30pm, Wednesdays, 10am-3pm, Fridays, 2-6pm and Saturdays, by appointment only.

Auditions

Theatre A La Carte will hold open auditions for its upcoming production, “Send Me No Flowers,” a comedy, on Wednesday, Feb. 5 and Thursday, Feb. 6 from 8-10pm at the Community Church of Douglaston, 39-50 Douglaston Pkwy. The cast includes 3 females (ages 20 to 50) and 6 males (ages 25 to 60). If possible, bring a short comedic monologue and a photo. Performances are three weekends beginning April 25.

The Community Singers of Queens is holding auditions at Messiah Lutheran Church, 42-15 165 St., Flushing. Voices at all levels are welcome. For more information, call 658-1021.

Music

The Side-by-Side Singers present “Smorgas-Broadway” on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 8pm at St. Barnabas Lutheran Church, 159-19 98 St., Howard Beach. Tickets are $14 and are sold at the door.

Lessons

A free Sahaja Yoga meditation program will be held at the Astoria Performing Arts Center, 31-30 33 St., in Astoria, on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1pm.

QSAC, a nonprofit group serving children and adults with autism, holds a weekly training seminar for parents and caregivers of persons with autism. All meetings are free. The Flushing Jewish Community Council is sponsoring English for speakers of other languages at Bethany Lutheran Church, 48-08 91 Pl., Elmhurst and Flushing. The Flushing Camera Club will meet on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at Flushing Hospital Administration Bldg., 45 Ave. and Burling St., at 7pm. There will be a mini-seminar explaining how to use multiple exposures. The monthly meeting will begin at 7:45pm with a program entitled, “Andes Adventure.”

Special Events

A special program celebrating the 300th Anniversary of the founding of the congregation of the Daughters of Wisdom will be held at Saint Mary Gate of Heaven Church, 103-12 101 Ave. in Ozone Park on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 2pm. These sisters taught at Our Lady of Wisdom Academy, Bishop McDonnell High School, Christ the King High School, St. Mary Gate of Heaven School and worked at various hospitals such as St. Charles, Holy Family and Good Samaritan. They also worked with disabled learners in many institutions.

An open mic night will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 6:30pm at the Flushing Library, 41-17 Main St.

The Jackson Heights Poets will be reading at Barnes and Noble, 70-00 Austin St., Forest Hills, on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 7pm. An open mic will follow.

St. Adalbert’s Bethany general bereavement support group meeting general group for loss of any loved one will be held Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7:30pm at St. Adalbert’s Parish Center, 52-40 84 St., Elmhurst, lower cafeteria.

Seniors

SNAP of Eastern Queens, 80-45 Winchester Blvd., (building 4 on the Creedmoor campus), Queens Village, announces the beginning of a new bereavement group for seniors who have experienced the recent death of a spouse or child. This group will meet Thursdays at 1pm. Call Marian at 454-2100.

Selfhelp Latimer Gardens Senior Center, 45-25 Kissena Blvd., Flushing, is now offering English as a Second Language classes at the beginning, basic, low-intermediate and advanced levels.
