Dear Editor:

Bloomberg Business Week recently reported that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs spent nearly $72 million last year on erectile dysfunction drugs for military veterans.

As an Air Force veteran (1964 to 1968), I appreciate what the VA does for those who serve their country. But wasting funds on recreational drugs isn’t justified by the VA or Medicare. That money should be used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, substance abuse, alcoholism and mental illness. It could also help prevent veterans’ suicides and get homeless vets off the streets. No one dies or gets seriously ill from erectile dysfunction. The real impotence lies in the VA’s judgment.
