“A horse is a horse, of course, of course” (Mr. Ed television series) first domesticated around 3500 BC in the Ukraine, according to archaeology, paleontology and molecular genetics. The automobile was born in the year 1886 with the Benz Patent-Motorwagen of German inventor Karl Benz. Motorized wagons then gradually replaced horse-drawn carriages, especially after automobiles became popular when the Ford Model T was introduced in 1908.
For hundreds of years, horse-drawn wagons drove the commercial engine of modern capitalism in New York City, with such exemplars as seen in the horse-drawn wagons of Boar’s Head (Brunckhorst’s) delicatessen products, of Abraham & Strauss’ deliveries, and of the merchant pushcarts. Traffic accidents, air and noise pollution became common only with the introduction of the car, truck and bus in lieu of horses and trains.
Further, thanks to the megalomaniacal efforts of Robert Moses to catalyze automobile transportation through the building of this labyrinthine system of bridges, tunnels, expressways and parkways (such as the monstrosity of the Kew Gardens Interchange now under renovation in Queens), we have further traffic congestion, with a concomitant increase in air pollution toxic to human and animal health.
The solution, therefore, to the present destruction of the ecosystem of New York City is to slowly ban automobiles, trucks and buses in districts of Manhattan, as well as the other boroughs, and expand the horse-drawn carriage and wagon industry. The problem is not the domesticated breeds of horse which have been successfully utilized by humans for over 5,000 years, but rather with the motorized vehicle, fossils fuels and an artificial, ugly metropolis such as even the poet Dante in his creative genius could not have conceived.
