Women in Astoria are being molested on the sidewalks by a serial groper who has been riding up behind them on a bicycle, fondling them and riding away.

The incidents have occurred along 30th Avenue and 31st Street, and also from 25th Avenue and 34th Avenue between Steinway and 50th streets, according to City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. (D-Astoria).

The predator is described as a Hispanic man in his mid-20s, with short brown hair, about 5 feet 10 inches tall.

Vallone, chairman of the Public Safety Committee, said he learned of the incidents from postings on whyleaveastoria.com and other websites. The councilman said he has spoken with several of the victims and is working with the 114th Precinct to catch the molester.

“This is a good example of how people can use social media like WhyLeaveAstoria as a type of neighborhood watch,” Vallone said in a prepared statement. “Many women might have thought theirs was an isolated incident not worth reporting but we now know there’s a serial groper riding his bike through our streets.”

The councilman urges anyone with information about the crimes to call his office at (718) 274-4500 or the 114th Precinct at (718) 626-9311.

Welcome to the discussion.
