Subway series brings out the fans

It was the final game of the July subway series for this season and the Mets shone, beating the Yankees 3-2 in a nail-biting 10-inning game on Sunday. The Bronx Bombers outscored the Amazins’ in the two earlier games Friday and Saturday, 5-1 and 5-2, respectively, so for Mets fans, Sunday’s victory was sweet. The weather obliged for Friday night’s game as well as Saturday afternoon’s duel, but the Sunday game was delayed 90 minutes due to rain. The packed Citi Field was the place to be over the holiday weekend. Some fans came early to cook for their friends in the parking lot at tailgate parties, while others favored the Shake Shack burgers. There were plenty of families with split loyalties, such as Leslie and Brian Powell. She’s a Yankees fan. He favors the Mets. When their 6-month-old daughter Reese grows up, she’ll decide the majority. The next series against the Yankees is scheduled for June 2012. Mets fans say they can’t wait. — Liz Rhoades
