Soap Box Derby races through Elmhurst

Fearless children took to the Flushing Meadows Soap Box Derby course in East Elmhurst to compete for the gold on Saturday The racers in the 25th annual event raced down a closed 23rd Avenue. Julian Francis, 8, from East Elmhurst won the stock division. He attends A Child’s Place. Yazmin Baptiste, 13, from Glen Oaks, won the super stock division. She attends the Learning Tree School. There were 24 champs competing, 12 in super stock and 10 in stock divisions.  The two winners will represent Queens in the All-American Soap Box Derby national competition in Akron, Ohio, on July 16 through July 21. They will compete for scholarships. “It’s a good thing for the kids to do, the community likes it, and it’s something a little different than baseball or basketball,” Steve Stafford, president of the Soap Box Derby, said.
