Fort Totten relay raises $$

A giant birthday party was held at Fort Totten Park in Bayside over the weekend as participants raised money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event. Hundreds turned out for the fundraiser, which ran from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning. About $109,000 was raised by the 225 volunteers. Participants marched in groups with team T-shirts or as individuals to raise money for the ACS and to proclaim the battle continues over the killer disease. Later in the day, as the evening drew nigh, lumineria were lit to remember those loved ones who had died from cancer. But the overriding mood was positive as numerous cancer survivors celebrated by lighting into a birthday cake. — Liz Rhoades
