Western Queens commemorated Memorial Day with a barbecue at Sunnyside Gardens Park and a parade sponsored by Saint Sebastian Catholic War Veterans of Woodside.

The parade began at St. Sebastian’s School and concluded in Doughboy Park where Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer (D-Sunnyside) addressed the crowd.

“Remembering the fallen and celebrating the heroic veterans who have risked their lives for our country is what this day is truly about,” said Van Bramer. “America would not be the land of the free if we weren’t home to the brave, so thank you to our courageous soldiers and veterans.”

For the littlest residents of western Queens, who may not yet understand the sacrifices made by our nation’s servicemen and women, entertainment was provided at Sunnyside Gardens Park. Children reveled in a bouncy castle and had their faces painted, celebrating the unofficial start of summer with their families.

Welcome to the discussion.
