For the third time in as many weeks, on Sunday an NYPD officer who worked in Queens was killed in a car crash.
Sgt. Anthony Johnson, 32, of the 114th Precinct in Astoria, and West Babylon LI, died after his car hit a tree and burst into flames at around 3 a.m., according to the Valley Stream Fire Department.
Johnson was heading west in a 2005 Jeep Cherokee on Sunrise Highway, just west of Rockaway Avenue when he lost control of the vehicle. Firefighters arrived and extinguished the blaze and discovered his body in the front seat.
Johnson’s death comes just two weeks after Andre Menzies, 35, who worked with PSA 9, which polices housing projects, was killed by a wrong-way driver on the Northern State Parkway on Nov. 15. He lived in North Babylon with his family.
Michael Bowen, 50 of Brooklyn was arrested and charged with DWI and reckless driving in connection with Menzies’ death.
Fred Barraza, a 33-year-old officer who worked at the 110th Precinct in Elmhurst died on Nov. 11, when he lost control of a Honda Accord and slammed into a tree in Westbury.
Like Menzies, Barraza was reportedly on his way home from work.
