On Saturday, area officials honored the Winged Fists, an Irish group established to preserve the legacy of the Irish-American Athletic Club, by renaming 43rd Street and 48th Avenue in Sunnyside “Winged Fist Way.”

Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer (D-Sunnyside), left, spearheaded the effort to rename the street, and appeared at the event along with Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), second from right, and state Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria), far right.

The Irish-American Athletic Club was open between 1898 to 1930. Over the years, athletes from the club won several Olympic medals. The club accepted members regardless of race or religion when that was uncommon, according to Van Bramer’s office.
