Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer (D-Sunnyside), center left, state Sen. Mike Gianaris (D-Astoria), left, Community Board 2 Chairman Joe Conley, rear left, and parents and children from PS/IS 78 rallied for safety on the corner of 48th Avenue and Center Boulevard in Long Island City last Friday.

The children painted their own crosswalk and joined Van Bramer in installing the “people’s stop sign.”

“Too often drivers treat Center Boulevard as a speedway,” Van Bramer said. “For years, the Department of Transportation has denied the community’s requests to have traffic-calming and pedestrian safety measures ... Our concerns cannot continue to be ignored.”

Welcome to the discussion.
