Last Sunday more than 300 children — ages 3 to 11 — hopped on their bikes for the 33rd Annual Children’s Bicycle Race in Astoria Park, one of the city’s oldest and longest running children’s bike races.
The event is a Vallone family affair.
Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. (D-Astoria) and the Astoria Civic Association, founded by Vallone’s grandfather Judge Charles Vallone, hosted the event, which was started by his father, former City Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr., more than three decades ago.
“For over 30 years, this bike race has been filled with fun for the whole family at one of New York City’s most beautiful locations. It was no different today, and it won’t be for the next 30 years either,” said Vallone Jr.
About $1,900 in prizes were distributed to the winners of each of the 16 races, with boys’ and girls’ divisions.
