The annual Woodside Memorial Day Parade kicked off at 11 a.m. Monday at the Vietnam Memorial near St. Sebastian’s School at 57th Street and Woodside Avenue.
Many politicians, veterans and residents young and old paid their respects to fallen soldiers at the event. The Woodside ZIP code, 11317, lost the most residents in the nation during the Vietnam War, according to St. Sebastian’s Catholic War Veterans Post 870 Commander Jerry Olt.
Post 870, at 39-46 61 St., hosted the parade and put on a post-parade barbecue for participants. The parade ended at Doughboy Park.
James Dimiceli, managing director of the Kennedy-Roth Funeral Home in Woodside, was the parade’s grand marshal.
“He has been very helpful with veterans’ burials over the years,” Olt said.
“I’m totally 1,000 percent honored to do this,” Dimiceli said.
A Catholic Mass at St. Sebastian’s Roman Catholic Church preceded the parade.
