The DOE tried to close Newtown and other Queens high schools last year by illegally applying their version of the Federal Turnaround Model. This is a thinly veiled backdoor attempt at closing Newtown by slowly starving the school of incoming freshmen students. Soon they will claim that because of declining enrollment (which they created!) they need to close the school to provide "choice" to the community. The community wants Newtown as it is. When will DOE realize that a large comprehensive school is also a "choice" that parents and students might desire?
