Officials and members of the community attended a groundbreaking ceremony for $2 million worth of renovations at East Elmhurst Playground, bounded by 25th Avenue and 98th and 100th streets. The park adjoins PS 127, a pre-K through grade 8 school.

In addition to the construction of a brand-new, custom-built skateboard park, the renovations will include reconstructing the ballfield, new color sealcoating on the existing basketball courts, a toddlers’ playground and a rebuilt seating area with new planting beds, the Parks Department said.

Green elements, such as pavers that direct rainwater into the park’s planting beds, will be incorporated, while the ballfield’s dugout will be made handicapped-accessible.

Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras (D-East Elmhurst) provided the $2 million from her member item funds, and will allocate an additional $1.3 million for a second round of improvements planned for the park, the Parks Department said.
