Police are investigating an anti-gay hate crime which took place in Astoria just after 6 p.m. last Thursday.

According to reports from the Queens Lesbian and Gay Pride Committee, one of their board members was attacked outside the All Season Deli at 31-18 36 Ave.

The assailant, whom police describe as a man who stands 5 feet 8 inches tall, went into the deli after attacking the victim, who was denied entry, according to the QLGPC.

The store’s clerk reportedly went on to serve the perpetrator, making jokes and calling the victim a “faggot,” according to the QLGPC.

“Our board member is physically OK, though emotionally shaken,” wrote the QLGPC in a statement. The attack did not warrant medical attention according to QLGPC. More information about the attack was not available and the victim did not wish to field questions.

“This incident causes us to take pause and acknowledge that there is still much work to be done in the LGBT community,” said Chris Calvert, co-chairman of the QLGPC.

“The outpouring of pure love for our community over the past month has been tremendous, yet there are those who choose to act otherwise and continue prejudice and hate toward the LGBT community.”

Other QLGPC members were also disappointed. “When such incidents take place in our neighborhoods and against our friends and colleagues, it stresses that we must continue to be united and vocal,” said Hank Krumholz, QLGPC co-chairman.

“Ignorance is bred if we remain silent, but tolerance can be achieved through our continued outreach, vigilance and strength.”

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 577-TIPS (8477). The public can also submit tips by logging onto Crime Stoppers’ website at nypdcrimestoppers.com or by texting their tips to CRIMES (274637), then entering TIP577. All information is kept strictly confidential.

The QLCPC was founded in 1992 and is a state-registered nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation. The organization is responsible for the Queens Pride Parade, held each June in Jackson Heights.
