The PS 229 fourth grade, in collaboration with Dancing Classrooms, an in-school ballroom dance residency, just completed the end of their 10-week program, in which students learned the waltz, rumba, meringue, swing, foxtrot, and tango.

Twelve students, above, from a group of almost 200 auditioned to join the competitive ballroom team. This year’s team practiced every day after school with their teachers and it paid off. The group took home gold medals in the Winter Finals, which will send them to the grand finale competition in June.

The teachers have been fundraising for the Dancing Classrooms program and to pay for the costumes themselves.A paraprofessional from the building even volunteered her time to custom fit each of the dancers so that their costumes would be picture-perfect and dance-ready.
