UPDATE: A registered sex offender, Houshang Hakimi, 69, was arrested in this case, police said March 11. Hakimi is homeless, according to police, though he formerly lived in Kew Gardens, according to an online phone book. He is not listed in the state's online sex offender registry, but that database does not cover all perpetrators.

Hakimi was charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17 years old and with failing to report a change of address, as required of registered sex offenders.

A man who tried but failed to lure a 12-year-old girl into his vehicle in Queens on March 5 is being sought by police.

The perpetrator pulled up alongside the girl in a light-colored sport utility vehicle as she was walking near the corner of 49th Street and Ditmars Boulevard in Astoria at about 4:15 p.m. The girl refused to get in, and when her babysitter approached, the driver fled.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 577-TIPS (8477). The public can also submit tips by logging onto nypdcrimestoppers.com, or by texting 274637 (CRIMES), then entering TIP577. Tips are confidential.
