Congressman Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), center, visited Woodside’s Rescue Company 4 on Tuesday to praise the passage of legislation that will help build a nationwide communications network, which he said would better connect first responders, police officers and firefighters.
“What became clear on September 11th is that too many firefighters and police officers could not communicate with each other because their radios simply didn’t work,” Crowley said. “The creation of a nationwide ... network is a long-overdue investment in the safety of our first responders.”
Provisions enabling the creation of such a network were part of a larger piece of legislation, the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act, which President Obama signed into law on Feb. 22. The bill also extends the payroll tax cut and emergency jobless benefits through the end of the year.
