In January a long time member of Community Board 4 in Corona resigned for what he said was the refusal of “several members” to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

At the April 10 meeting one such member spoke out about why she chose not to salute the flag.

Beth Ferguson, who no longer sits on the board, said she does not respect the flag because of the way her father was treated during the war.

Her father passed away in 1994. She found out then that he had not received the medals that were pledged to him.

She said then it was protocol not to send medals to officers who were illiterate. They received a letter of what they had earned but the medals were not sent, she said.

Her father’s illiteracy was a product of growing up at the time as an American Indian and African American in the United States, according to Ferguson.

“I salute God Almighty, that’s it,” said Ferguson.
